In 1974 need existed to provide the citizens of Floyd County with an organized Emergency Medical Service. The Floyd County Volunteer Lifesaving and First Aid Squad was formed. Thirty three citizens agreed to staff the squad. The all volunteer squad provided this service until A DECLINE IN VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED THE COUNTY TO GIVE ASSISTANCE TO THE VOLUNTEER STAFF WITH PAID PERSONNEL in 2003.

THE COUNTY CONTRACTED WITH CARILION TRANSPORT SERVICE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. DUE TO THE RISING COST IT WAS DECIDED TO ESTABLISH A SERVICE WITHIN THE COUNTY TO ASSIST THE VOLUNTEER STAFF.

In the fall of 2004 the Floyd County Emergency Medical Service was formed. This service would hire county employees to provide basic and advanced life support service twenty four hours per day, seven days a week when volunteer personnel are not able to respond. Private insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid will be billed for all emergency medical services provided.
